What to Know About Shooting in an Arkansas Junior High School

On Monday, the first day of personal study in Arkansas, a student was injured in a shooting at Watson Chapel Junior High School in Pine Bluff. According to the school district’s Facebook page, all district campuses have been closed for two hours after the shootings, which the district described as an “isolated case”. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and Pine Bluff Police are reportedly on-site to “check the situation.” Filming took place as students switched classrooms to move on to the next classes. When all the students heard gunshots, the protocol said they were abruptly taken into the gym. In a press conference on Monday afternoon, the Pine Bluff police explained the events. Police chief Kelvin Sergeant said the division was informed of the shooting at 9:59 a.m. and the first officer arrived at the school at 10:02 a.m. The 15-year-old victim was taken to the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff before they were taken to the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock. According to officers, he is currently in “serious condition”. Police also announced that a 15-year-old male suspect is currently in custody. The suspect had initially fled the scene to hide behind a house in one of the neighboring streets. When police found him, he was taken to the Jack Jones Juvenile Detention Center in Pine Bluff. According to the school district’s Facebook page, which posted updates throughout the day, the dead student’s parents were notified and all other students were declared safe. In the hours following filming, local news agency KATV shared video footage of several cars secured on the road to Watson Chapel Junior High School, mostly with parents trying to pick up their children. Police officers stayed at the scene the entire time. Sergeant reiterated that the department believed the shooting was an isolated incident and would not discuss whether it was the result of gang-related activity.
