Aerion Supersonic has announced plans to develop a new supersonic jet that will transport passengers from London to New York in less than an hour.

At a speed of Mach 4 plus or 4,828 kilometers per hour, the AS3 will complete its first flight before the end of the decade and be able to carry 50 passengers up to 11,265 km.

Aerion’s mission is to make air travel “an exciting, enjoyable, efficient and luxurious experience again”. While the company is committed to bringing supersonic mobility to the world, it is also committed to stopping climate change.

The AS2 supersonic aircraft, a forerunner to the AS3, is the first certified aircraft to run on 100 percent carbon-derived synthetic fuels, essentially extracting carbon dioxide from the air. It will also use trademarked Boomless Cruise technology to ensure the sonic boom never hits the ground. And it will be the first supersonic aircraft that does not require post-burned engines.

The company has already begun development of its 44.5-acre Aerion Park in Melbourne, Florida, which will produce AS2 and AS3. “Aerion is an exciting place that is driven by entrepreneurs, developers and innovators,” says Vice.

Earlier this year, Aerion expanded its ongoing partnership with NASA’s Langley Research Center with the intention of accelerating the development of high-speed commercial flight and faster point-to-point travel, specifically studying commercial flight in the Mach 3 to 5 range.
