Schumer: New York colleges to receive $ 2.6 billion in COVID relief

WASHINGTON (NEWS10) – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer released a breakdown of US bailout funds going to colleges and universities in New York. Public, private and company-owned colleges are set to receive around $ 2.6 billion, Schumer said.

Schumer: $ 2.5 billion for schools in New York state under the American Rescue Plan

“With New York colleges, universities, and students facing unprecedented hurdles for over a year, they do so at a cost that we must address and overcome. In prioritizing the health and safety of students, faculties and staff, New York higher education institutions have torn massive gaps in their budgets and are now facing financial havoc – and we just cannot allow that, ”said Sen. Schumer.

According to Schumer, company-owned schools will use their awards to provide financial grants. On the flip side, public and nonprofit schools will spend half of their funds on emergency financial aid to help students return to class safely. They will support basic student needs such as housing, food and healthcare.

WNY Colleges, other institutions projected to receive more than $ 172 million

For these public and non-profit schools, the other half supports student support activities and institutional costs such as payroll, lost revenue, reimbursement of expenses already incurred, technology costs related to the transition to distance learning, and training for teachers and staff.
