Retired New York firefighter dies after battling 9/11 illness

Retired firefighter Dennis A. Farrell died Tuesday after an illness related to September 11th, the New York Fire Department said on Friday.

“We lost another FDNY brother to 9/11 disease,” said the Ray Pfeifer Foundation, a nonprofit that helped firefighters and police officers who failed to respond to the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center insured medical needs responded in a Facebook post. “Our thoughts go with the family and friends of Dennis A. Farrell.”

The officials did not disclose the exact cause of death.

Farrell joined the fire department in 1991 and retired in 2002. During this time he served with Ladder Company 59 in the Bronx, according to the Fire Department.

A memorial service is planned for Tuesday afternoon. A Christian burial mass and private cremation service are expected to take place the next day.

Farrell is one of at least 241 New York firefighters who have died of diseases related to the attacks on the World Trade Center. The department said 343 members died on the actual day of the attacks.
