A couple of astute writers recently turned words into something that seems natural, but for anyone who loves to read, keep an eye out: “Literature is culture,” wrote Slate critic Laura Miller, while writer Sheila wrote on Twitter Heti wrote: “Writers are their time.” (Or something in that sense anyway: Heti, a dedicated self-extinguishers, didn’t remove her tweet long after she posted it.) The point is, books don’t exist in a vacuum and even works of pure history or fantasy are shaped by the context of their own World of the writer.
