New York Metropolis campaigns for black-owned firms
New York City has launched a new campaign called “Shop Your City: BE NYC” to encourage New Yorkers to shop at black-owned businesses, which make up 3.5 percent of the city’s total.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every small business in our city – but our black companies are particularly hard hit,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “BE NYC is part of our commitment to recreation for all New Yorkers and helping our small businesses thrive in this pandemic and beyond.”

The campaign, which was launched during Black History Month, will highlight black businesses on social media that have remained active and serving their communities throughout the pandemic. Provide online resources to help New Yorkers discover and shop for the city’s black-owned small businesses, and encourage New Yorkers to tag a black-owned small business on Instagram.
In addition, the city’s Department of Small Business Services will host a Black History Month roundtable on February 25th, which will highlight “Past and present examples of resilience, ingenuity, and reinterpretation within the black business community, as well as general lessons for New York economic recovery City highlights. According to the mayor, black companies have been hit hard by the pandemic and are closing twice as often. Overall, these companies recorded a 41 percent decline in activity between February and April 2020 alone.
“Black companies have had tremendous success because of this pandemic. BE NYC, the city’s first initiative to tackle the racial wealth gap, will continue to find new and creative ways to support these companies, ”said Thompson. “The ‘Shop Your City: BE NYC’ campaign will push New Yorkers to shop locally and help our small businesses come back stronger than ever.”
