Live updates for New York Yankees Spring Training at Toronto Blue Jays

DUNEDIN, Fla. – Gerrit Cole is up against a division rival less than two weeks before the opening day? What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon?

The Yankees are back in Dunedin to face the Blue Jays with their ace on the hill.

Since we’re setting ourselves up for first place, here are the starting lineups for Sunday and some related information.

Cole will make another start after this game before facing the same Blue Jays on opening day. He had Kyle Higashioka behind the plate on Sunday when Higgy returned from a short stretch on the sidelines with a sore side.

Not every starter traveled from Tampa to Dunedin, but players like Gary Sánchez, DJ LeMahieu and Gio Urshela played in Sarasota last night.

LIVE UPDATES

First inning

The Yankees explode for four runs up in the first. Luke Voit and Clint Frazier both rip RBI doubles while Derek Dietrich adds an RBI single. Tanner Roark didn’t even record two outs before being removed from the game.

Gerrit Cole nearly gave up a leadoff homer on George Springer and then let Cavan Biggo hit a single to the right, but he got through the first frame without giving up a run.

Third inning

Thairo Estrada leads New York with seven runs after starting a three-run homer into the center right.

Fifth inning

Cole allowed his first run of the game, a solo shot by Marcus Semien. He has five frames with only four allowed hits and eight strikeouts.

Sixth inning

New York adds another. Thairo Estrada scores after a goal from Tyler Wade and leads 8-1 Yankees.

Gerrit Cole’s day is over after five innings and throws 78 pitches with eight strikeouts. He only allowed one run on the solo homer. Asher Wojciechowski is from the Yankees bullpen.

Seventh inning

Lucas Luetge’s goalless spring is over. The left-hander fires a solo shot at Teoscar Hernandez on the opposite field. It’s 8-2, Yankees.

Eighth inning

Kevin Smith starts another solo shot by Lütge, this one in the deep left midfield.

Ninth inning

FINAL: Yankees 8, Blue Jays 3

Gerrit Cole wins when the bullpen holds for New York.

The Yankees are back in action Monday night, hosting the Phillies at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Jameson Taillon is expected to create the start for New York.
