Jill Biden provides the impartial New York designer a lift with the Purple Ensemble
All eyes were on the Bidens as they left Wilmington, Delaware and arrived in Washington, DC on Tuesday afternoon before the President’s inauguration on Wednesday.
After an emotional farewell speech in their hometown, the incoming President and First Lady landed at Andrews Air Force Base just before 5 p.m. with a plan to stop the Lincoln Memorial for the first time to pay respect to those who died from COVID have lost -19.
For her first appearance in the capital for the dedication events, President-elect Joe Biden wore a long navy coat, light blue shirt, and tie, and Jill Biden opted for a tonal purple ensemble, including a coat tied with a velvet ribbon and matching gloves and mask.
Created by New York-based independent designer Jonathan Cohen, the look could signal Biden’s intention to support young fashion talent during their time as first lady – and perhaps embrace more sustainable fashion practices.
Cohen grew up in La Jolla, California, the beach town near San Diego, and launched his collection in 2011. He was familiar with the upcycling trend in fashion early on, which has spread as sustainability has become a key issue for brands. He introduced a capsule of upcycled pieces called The Studio in 2019 and has continued to work with scraps as part of his production ever since.
Biden’s wrap coat with a velvet tie and dress with inserts are part of the brand’s upcoming fall 2021 collection. The mask comes from the studio. The mask and the lining of the garments are upcycling fabrics from previous collections, confirmed a representative of the brand. Cohen declined to comment.
Biden has had a history of American designers, wearing Gabriela Hearst and Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia dresses from Oscar de la Renta for key moments during the campaign.
Cohen is a lesser-known name, and Biden putting it in the spotlight comes at a critical time for independent designers who have seen their business decline sharply during the pandemic.
For those who like to analyze these things, the ultraviolet color has long been associated with nonconformity and experimentation and has a meditative quality. It also represents the unity and commonality between red and blue. The theme of President-elect Biden’s inauguration is America United.
