How the flight attendant’s ode to New York vacationer retailers obtained Cuomo’s seal of approval

On Thursday, HBO Max released the final episode of its new thriller The Flight Attendant, starring Kaley Cuoco and Rosie Perez. In addition to a lot of outer clothing, Cuoco’s character Cassie wears an article in the penultimate episode that is dear to both tourists and New Yorkers: an “I Love New York” hoodie. As the start of the season shows Cassie in bright colors and vivid patterns as her life begins to unravel – realizing she could either be arrested for murder or herself murdered – her fashion choices become looser and more subdued. Their collection of Saint Laurent coats and Gucci skirts is ditched and replaced with an item bought in a tourist shop. And like the whirlwind story, the hoodie also has an unexpected backstory.
“We needed an outfit change – something Cassie could have bought off the street – otherwise she would be in the same clothes forever,” said Cat Thomas, the show’s costume designer, told Refinery29. The cast had just recently returned to filming after the lockdown and brought Thomas and the rest of the crew back to New York. (Production stopped in March due to COVID-19 before resuming for the last two episodes in August.) On her return, a solution to her roadblock came: “I love this city so much, so much [an ‘I Love New York’ sweatshirt] felt like the perfect fit. “That is, until another problem arose in the form of the clearance required to label the hoodie.
According to Thomas, they needed New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s permission to include it on the show. Yes, it is mandatory. “Since this was one of those last minute additions, Kaley and I came to the realization late. We talked about adding [the hoodie,] and I said, ‘Oh god, Kaley, we actually need to sort this out! ‘“But as if the ghost of Alex Sokolov (Michiel Huisman), who plays Cassie’s late confidante throughout the season, sent happiness from beyond the grave. Another solution emerged.

According to Thomas, Perez, who plays Megan on the show, is a huge fan of Cuomo and knows him personally. “I went to Rosie and begged. I literally said, “I know you know Cuomo. I know you can do it. If someone can do it, you can! ‘And she immediately said,’ I’m in! ‘“Somehow the plan actually worked. “He called from his office to sort it out for the next day.”
“We were one of the first productions after COVID, so we all cried together because [the piece] is such a symbol – it made us all very happy and proud, ”remembers Thomas. “It felt the way it should be.”
