Francisco Lindor from Mets explains why New York is nice to be when he unveils the signature New Steadiness shoe
At the same time that four-time all-star shortstop Francisco Lindor is starting a new chapter in his baseball career – it was traded on the New York Mets in January – he will also unveil his newest off-field venture.
On Monday, New Balance officially unveiled the brand’s first signature baseball shoe and apparel collection. Lindor, who first signed with New Balance in 2017, was an integral part of the entire brainstorming and design process. And for so much joy that Lindor shows playing baseball, his joy and passion for the game is also expressed in the new collection.
“Every time I hear Lindor 1 and the Lindor Pro collection, I just smile,” Lindor said in an interview with CBS Sports. “It’s a Dream.”
Lindor, who was already used to the boredom of baseball and the training of the sport, was able to easily apply this precision, concentration and patience in the design of his new studs “The Lindor 1” and his clothing line. Lindor was there every step of the way, from the decision about the colors and the material to the specific lettering and surfaces.
“I remember going through ideas [with New Balance] and when I started putting things together and then one of the shoe designers would work them out, take them out to me and my agent, and then we would go from there, “Lindor told CBS Sports.” It was very cool and part of that process is very humble. “
Combining his two passions – baseball and fashion – the collection displays design themes unique to Lindor’s journey from growing up in Caguas, Puerto Rico to becoming one of the game’s brightest young stars.
“Few baseball stars have made a successful transition into the lifestyle and fashion world,” said Pat Cassidy, global director for consumer brand marketing and athlete activation at New Balance, in a press release on Monday. “Lindor is a trendsetter on and next to the diamond … This collection enables us to tell its story authentically through innovative design and to inspire the next generation of stars to make their dreams come true.”
The Lindor 1 shoe collection includes a classic baseball stud style in black and white as well as a lifestyle shape. A distinctive floral pattern is featured on all sneakers, which Lindor says was inspired by the national flower of his homeland.
“The floral design is the national flower of Puerto Rico called Flor de Maga, and it’s hibiscus.” Lindor, who has a tattoo of the flower, said. The inspiration for the design of Flor de Maga began when Lindor shared a photo of the flowers with the New Balance team. It was from there and they decided that this was what they would choose for printing the shoes.
In addition to the hibiscus design, Lindor’s personal mattresses “Be Consistent” and “Stay Positive” are embedded in both clothing and shoes. In addition, there are several previous New Balance logos mixed in with Lindor’s “FL” initials logo, merging the two together to create an old and new look.
Lindor not only provided inspiration for the designs in the line, but also gave input on the function and structure of each of its items. With the cleats, Lindor wanted to focus on support, especially after sustaining a severe ankle sprain prior to the start of the 2019 MLB season.
“I told them I needed something to support me,” said Lindor. “I don’t want an ankle brace. I want something that keeps me stable, holds me in the shoe and doesn’t move. And then I also wanted outfield players to wear it and feel comfortable, and infielder to wear and feel it.” convenient, catchers, jugs, everyone. “
Lindor wanted to combine the comfort of a supportive sneaker and sole with a stylish look and also make it comfortable for all types of baseball players. The Lindor 1 offers two straps, one on the metatarsus and a detachable strap for additional ankle support.
“That was the key, it was like we were going to make it comfortable and very fashionable for the world,” Lindor said. “Not just on the batting cages, but also [also] Carry it from the field, to the mall, to the club, to a restaurant, to any family event. “
Recently, Major League Baseball has begun capitalizing on the individuality and freedom of expression of players on the field and easing restrictions on the color and design of game shoes on the field. Lindor believes his new shoe comes at just the right time.
“To be able to combine fashion, baseball, my lifestyle and everything and create this shoe and this collection, I find it huge and now that we finally have more freedom to wear different things on the field, this is a great shoe “, he said.
When it comes to the fashion world, 27 year old Lindor is just getting started. And the timing of his move to New York – a city considered a global fashion destination – couldn’t come at a better time.
“I know I’m a baseball player, my fans know I’m a baseball player, but now with these shoes and this collection the goal is to reach these high fashion markets and it’s great to be in New York too “said Lindor said. “I think it’s going to be very, very cool to get in touch with different people in New York.”
After his baseball career ended, Lindor wouldn’t mind expanding into the fashion world.
“I love to wear different things, I love to wear colors,” said Lindor. “I think [what you wear] is a way to express yourself without speaking. Let people know that you have some idea about what you are doing or how happy you are. I will see myself on this path at some point and hope that this is the beginning. “
Lindor wouldn’t give any clues as to what he’ll look like on opening day 2021 – his debut for the Mets. But you can bet it will be Francisco Lindor, brave and confident.
The entire collection includes shoes, clothing and a headband. It will be available from March 1, 2021.
