After entering the national stage with great success in January, Ella Emhoff went on her first runway this week. The knitting fanatic and Parsons fashion student – better known to many as the stepdaughter of Vice President Kamala Harris – was one of the models to be seen in Proenza Schouler’s Fall 2021 show at New York Fashion Week, much to the surprise and delight of her fast-growing fan base.

Emhoff signed with IMG Models after making a style statement for the ages at the inauguration last month (she’d done some modeling with a smaller agency the previous year, but joining IMG was a whole new level). IMG President Ivan Bart told the New York Times that he was hit the instant he saw her at the ceremony. “Ella shares this moment,” he said. “There is a cheek and a joy that it radiates.”

For his part, Emhoff expressed mixed feelings to The Times about her emerging modeling career. “When I was younger I never saw that as part of my timeline,” she said, adding, “As someone who, like many young girls, had confidence issues, it’s intimidating and scary to walk into this world that is focuses on you and your body. “

Nevertheless, she made her art colleagues at Proenza proud when she appeared on a panel with the designer for the first time earlier this week and has now given the label her face. Curly hair and glasses have never looked so cool.
