Digital entrance rows whereas New York digital trend reveals kick off

Fashionistas will be looking around their screens to catch the latest designer trends of this fashion week as the traditional fall / winter catwalk calendar practically kicks off on Sunday in New York.

With the existing restrictions of Covid-19, the usual front row celebrities, snapping street photographers, and exclusive parties are gone, replaced with virtual or, in some cases, socially distant shows.

Designers will showcase more than 100 “content” from their Fall / Winter 2021-2022 collections in a movie, live event, or lookbook, said IMG, which hosts New York Fashion Week: The Shows.

“There’s a lot of hope this year and last month with the momentum of the inauguration (of the US President) and the vaccine,” said April Guidone, global senior vice president of marketing and branding strategy for IMG, in an interview.

“I think everyone has a hopeful outlook for the rest of the year, but I’m also excited to be able to show in any form that they can in a creative way.”

Brands like The Blonds and Badgley Mischka will share video streams while big names Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren are not on the show schedule. The few live events include shows by designers Jason Wu and Rebecca Minkoff, Guidone said.

“We worked very closely with the governor and health officials to make sure our protocols were followed,” she said, adding that a new fashion week podcast would also be released.

Earlier this month, the Council of Fashion Designers of America unveiled its American Collections Calendar, a renamed and expanded New York Fashion Week, with additional presentations from US designers to be shown at later times.

The fashion and luxury goods industries have been hard hit by the global pandemic as shop closings and travel restrictions plummeted demand.

Global sales of personal luxury goods fell 23% to 217 billion euros ($ 262.42 billion) in 2020, the first decline since 2009, according to consulting firm Bain.

“It’s been a tough time for everyone in business. Fashion is about looking good, and if no one is really looking at you, it doesn’t make much sense. … Spiritually it’s a very difficult moment,” said Godfrey Deeny, Global Editor-in-chief of FashionNetwork.com.
