COVID-19: NY will have the nation’s first “vaccination record”

New York is the first state to introduce a “vaccination pass” that residents can use to prove they were vaccinated against COVID-19 or recently tested negative for the virus.

At the weekend, the Empire State presented the “Excelsior Pass, “An app that New Yorkers can use to prove they’ve completed the COVID-19 vaccination process in order to gain access to specific events and businesses.

The app will allow New Yorkers to prove they are vaccinated or have had a negative COVID-19 test in the recent past.

“Similar to a boarding pass for mobile airlines, individuals can either print their passport or save it on their smartphone using the Excelsior Pass Wallet app,” officials said when announcing the new program.

“Each run has a secure QR code that participating companies and venues can scan using a companion app to check evidence of negative COVID-19 test results or evidence of vaccination. A person’s data is always treated securely and confidentially. ”

Officials said the app doesn’t display any health information when scanned – it just shows a green check mark if the person has been vaccinated or tested negative, or a red “x” if they haven’t.

Celebrity venues, including Madison Square Garden, will start using the app this week starting Friday April 2nd before it rolls out to smaller art, entertainment and performance venues, ”said Andrew Cuomo, New York governor.

“New Yorkers have proven they can follow public health guidelines to fight back COVID,” Cuomo said in a statement. “The innovative Excelsior Pass is another tool in our new Virus Fighting Toolbox that can safely reopen more industries and keep personal information safe.

To sign in, New Yorkers can register by downloading the app and entering personal information to verify their identity. The app will then pull data from the state vaccine registry and a number of pre-approved COVID-19 testing companies.

“The question of public health or the economy has always been the wrong choice – the answer has to be both,” added Cuomo. “With more New Yorkers vaccinated every day and with key public health metrics regularly hitting their lowest rates in months, the Excelsior Pass will be the first in the nation to usher in the next step in our thoughtful, science-based reopening.”
