Apple Crumble

Apple Crumble is a classic, perfect dessert. Although there are different trends and fashions for desserts over time, you can be sure you will never get it wrong if you make Apple Crisp for pudding. Why? Because probably there are very few people who don’t like it. And it is an incredibly easy to make dessert that uses very simple ingredients.

Fragrant Apple Filling

You will need apples to prepare it. You can use a particular cooking sort, but you can use any type in truth, but you may end up with either a mushier or chunkier apple base. Also, depending on the sweetness of apples, you will have to use less or more sugar. 

Adding ground cinnamon ensures the dessert will be aromatic. Your house will also fill with a beautiful fragrance when and after you prepare your apple dessert. If you like it, you could also add some cloves.

Crumble Topping Ingredients

The second part of this dessert – the crumble – can be made with three simple ingredients only: sugar, flour and butter. However, you can get creative about specifics. You can use your favourite sugar or any you currently have at home, including brown sugar or granulated sugar.

Although I love a rich, buttery crumble, you can replace butter with coconut oil if you are a vegan. The texture of the crumb topping will be slightly different but also delicious. 

Similarly, if you are on a gluten-free diet, use a gluten-free one in place of all purpose flour. It can be either a shop-bought GF flour mixture or a combination of your favourite types. For the extra taste and texture in your crumble topping, You could also add some nuts, either ground or chopped.

When it comes to the apple crumble topping, I prefer chunky pieces. That is why I always make sure they are big. So, if I don’t end up with the desired size after processing the crumble, I just manually put together smaller pieces of the crumb mixture.

How to Serve Apple Crisp

If you count calories, having Apple Crumble just as it is will be already a wonderful experience. However, if you want a real feast, serve it with fresh cream {double is the best ;)} or vanilla ice cream. Whichever way of serving you choose, I am sure this delicious crumble will satisfy your sweet tooth.

 

Amazing Apple Crumble Recipe

Ingredients

Apple Filling:

  • 6 medium apples
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2-4 tbsp white sugar 

Crumble ingredients:

  • 175 g all-purpose flour
  • 100 g unsalted butter, cold, plus a bit more for greasing
  • 85 g Demerara sugar {granulated sugar}
  • 85 g almond flour {almond meal}

Instructions

  1. Preheat an oven to 180 Celsius degrees (160 for fan oven).
  2. Grease an oven-proof baking dish with butter.
  3. Peel, core, and cut the apples into slices; put them in a mixing bowl, add the cinnamon and sugar, mix well. The amount of sugar to be used depends on the apples: if I use sweet apples sometimes, I don’t add any sugar.
  4. In a food processor, whizz the flour, cold butter, demerara sugar and almond meal until crumbly.
  5. Spread the crumble mixture evenly on top of the apples, put it in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes till the crumble is golden.
